Predictive Learning Presentation

Uncategorized

Last week Thursday (26 September 2024) I was fortunate enough to be allowed to present at Moodle Moot Africa in Johannesburg. I gave a presentation on the Predictive Learning tool that we are developing at iLite. A tool that we hope will change the way users engage with Moodle.

This is a rather bold departure from the traditional learning paradigm of a course with several topics and activities, ending in a certificate. A format we are all familiar with and pretty much all we see in Moodle.

But when you look around how people consume data, when even a 3 minute song has to be sped up because that’s to long. Then it might be time to think about how we make content available to users.

Below is a reworked version of my presentation.

In today’s digital age, we’re used to having choices at our fingertips. Whether it’s picking your favorite playlist on Spotify, curating a watchlist on Netflix, or choosing which AI assistant to chat with, our world revolves around personalization. So, why is online learning still so rigid?

For years, online education has stuck to a traditional formula: long courses, set modules, and a linear approach to learning. While it has its merits, this model doesn’t reflect the way we consume content in other areas of our lives. Imagine if Spotify only let you listen to albums from start to finish without skipping or curating your own playlist. The frustration would be palpable!

Yet, this is how online learning operates for many.

The Power of Choice in Learning

Enter Predictive Learning, a groundbreaking approach we’re bringing to the table. Predictive Learning doesn’t just give you a course; it gives you options. Much like curating your own playlist, this new plugin allows you to create a personalized learning experience—one where you are in control of what you learn and when.

Imagine having access to every piece of content on your learning platform—whether it’s videos, texts, or even images—all at once. Not just courses or topics, but everything. Every. Single. Piece. Of. Content. At your fingertips.

This isn’t just a theoretical concept. We’ve built it.

How it Works

Our plugin indexes all content available on the Moodle LMS platform—pages, books, videos, and more. Using advanced AI models, we extract keywords, summarize content, and even interpret images and video transcripts. The result is a rich and diverse collection of learning objects that are fully discoverable, searchable, and tailored to your needs.

Instead of forcing students down a pre-determined learning path, this system offers **learning options**. It presents a map of possibilities, with each piece of content linked to the skills and competencies students aim to develop.

From Progress to Skills Mastery

In traditional online learning, success is measured by course completion. But how do you know if you’re truly mastering the skills you need? With our plugin, you don’t just see how far you are in a course—you see a real-time reflection of your growing skillset.

As you engage with content, the system also recommends learning materials to strengthen weak areas, giving you a clear view of how to improve.

Personalized Learning Lists and Discovery

One of the most powerful features of our plugin is its ability to help you discover and save content. If you come across something interesting, simply tag it. These tags are stored in your notes, allowing you to build custom learning lists—akin to creating your personal study playlist.

And there’s more. The system allows you to browse learning objects at your own pace, offering a level of discovery unheard of in traditional learning platforms.

Conclusion

The future of online education isn’t about rigid courses; it’s about giving learners the freedom to explore, discover, and master skills on their own terms. With Predictive Learning, we’re breaking the mould, offering students more control, more options, and a more engaging, personalized learning experience. The days of passive learning are over. Welcome to the future of education.
