Over the past few days, several clients have asked us to upgrade their sites to Moodle 5.0 so they can integrate OpenAI. The obvious reason? They want to use ChatGPT to generate course content and images.
But here’s the twist: while many are connecting AI to Moodle, we’ve been working on connecting Moodle to AI—essentially going in the other direction.
And honestly, maybe it’s just me… but why would you want to create content inside Moodle using AI? Is that really where you want to do your course planning and storyboarding?
Nearly a year ago, I spoke at MoodleMoot Johannesburg about predictive learning. It didn’t go well. I thought I had an MVP—Minimum Viable Product—but in reality, it was more like Missing Vital Part. My tool scraped all the content in Moodle and made it searchable. It worked perfectly… but nobody wanted it.
Fast forward to today, and that same idea suddenly has a purpose. By connecting Moodle to AI, the content we scrape is now feeding LLMs for our clients. What used to be a solution in search of a problem has become a true MVP.
We’re now on our second MVP: scraping Moodle course content, ingesting it into a vector database, and running inference using a small LLM.
Taking Moodle to AI is where the real transformation is happening.
